Happy Belated 5th Ave High School Musical Awards!

Okay, I know that this happened more than one week ago, but I thought that it deserved a mention on BlogwayBaby because it was such a spectacular evening. The 2008 5th Ave High School Musical Awards were held on June 9, 2008, at Benaroya Hall. Usually the awards are held at the 5th Ave Theatre itself, but because of preparations for Shrek (w00t w00t), this was impossible. However, this definitely did not dampen the spirits of the students in the audience, whose screaming was always louder than the orchestra or microphones!

I was there to support my friends who had been nominated and Mercer Island High School's production of Bat Boy the Musical! We were seated in row G so the camera would sometimes pan over us (the awards appeared on television)! That was pretty cool, but my favorite parts of the evening were probably when the leading actor and actress nominees performed a little bit of one of their songs from their show. Mia Yoshida as Kim in Lewis and Clark High School's Miss Saigon, Danny Lindgren as Nobel, et al in Kentridge High School's Little Me, and Devon Uy as Tevye in Stanwood High School's Fiddler on the Roof were the final winners in these two categories, but good job to everyone else who was nominated or had an honorable mention!

The award for Outstanding Overall Musical Production went to Woodinville High School for their production of Good News, but I thought that all of the nominees for this category were worthy. From Mack and Mabel to Miss Saigon to Seussical, the performances of each nominated school got me even more interested in doing a show in high school next year! I'm definitely looking forward to being a part of a show and going to the High School Musical awards! I've been told by some of my friends who were in nominated shows that going to the awards is the best part of doing a high school show! From what I saw that night, most of the students present would agree with that statement. :-)

THE TALE OF PIGLING BLAND: A 45-minute children's musical based on the classic Beatrix Potter story. Premiered at Toronto Fringe 2006.

NAKED IN AMERICA -- THE MUSICAL: A wry and sometimes shocking musical revue that exposes the naked truth about our attitudes towards nudity, sex, and violence. Premiered at Theatre Building Chicago on Monday, October 16, 2006.

AD CRAZY: The sequel to PLANE CRAZY, which follows the continuing story of head stew Holly Banks as she enters the wild world of Madison Avenue in the '70s. Through her adventures Holly learns that "There Is More To Me Than The Me Decade™"

BECKY AND THE BOOGER: The new tween musical that tells the cautionary tale of nose picking gone terribly, terribly wrong. Our heroine learns to "Pick Your Friends, Not Your Nose™".

Richard Adler (b. 1923) Lyricist Richard Adler is best recalled as part of the team of composer Jerold Ross and Adler. Best known for The Pajama Game and Damn Yankees. Adler was unable to reproduce these successes after the death of Ross in 1955.

From Hollywood to Broadway

They say it's the hot trend in musicals today -- adapting a popular movie to the stage -- but while The Producers (2001), adapted from The Producers (1968) and Hairspray (2002), adapted from Hairspray (1988) grab all the attention, the trend has actually been around for a while. Here's a sampling of a list that seems to grow every day.

David Merrick, the legendary impressario, actually loved to adapt film material and he became famous with some of these productions:

42nd Street (1933) became 42nd Street (1980)

Marcel Pagnol's Marseilles Trilogy (1929) became Fanny: A New Musical (1954)

The Apartment (1960) became Promises, Promises (1968)

Some Like It Hot (1959) became Sugar (1972)

10: An American in Paris / Gigi because France in the '50s is simply irresistible;

9: There's No Business Like Show Business because of Ethel Merman...'nuff said?;

8: West Side Story, because even though they dubbed Natalie Wood they retained the energy of the original staging;

7: Guys and Dolls, and not everyone likes this one because of Brando's singing, but I just love the sets, the times, and Frank is simply perfect;

6: Flying Down to Rio / Gay Divorcee / Roberta / Top Hat / Follow the Fleet and Swing Time / Shall We Dance / Carefree / The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle / The Barkleys of Broadway because this list wouldn't be complete without Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, who kept me company afternoons that I used to skip out of school to watch these musicals on TV;

3: Jesus Christ Superstar because of Norman Jewison's incredibly inventive filmography, the energy, the '70s...the closest thing I've ever had to a religious experience;

2: It's a tie between White Christmas because of "Sisters": One of the most important songs in my life and Holiday Inn because despite the cringe-worthy blackface routines and racist stereotyping, it has one of the best dance numbers ever with Fred Astaire and a pocketful of firecrackers;

1: Singin' in the Rain because of Donald O'Connor's "Make 'em Laugh" (even though it was blatantly ripped off of Cole Porter's "Be A Clown") and "Good Morning", our daily refrain in the Conn household.
