How Great Was Victor/Victoria?

One of my great theater experiences, ever, was a visit to NYC in the mid-90s to see Damn Yankees. While we were there, my husband and I had an extra night, and we weren't sure what to do with ourselves. On a whim, we called to see if they had any tickets for Victor/Victoria, which was playing to mixed reviews.

Not only did we get tickets, we were center orchestra, fourth row. Julie Andrews was literally spitting on us. In fact, I'm still wiping bits of phlegm off my clothing, all these years later.

It was a transcendental experience. Although the show was deeply flawed, seeing Julie Andrews on stage was incredible. She was so radiant she lit up the theater. And now that she can't sing anymore, it was our one and only chance to see her in Broadway (until they invent the time machine that we can use to go back and see her in Camelot). The sets were also fantastic. Music: So-so...

We saw it one more time: With Liza Minelli (another use it or lose it chance to see a legend on stage), which was kind of a train wreck, but fun to witness...
